"Ready To Quit," Says HD Kumaraswamy, Betraying Coalition Chaos

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy today threatened to quit as he reacted furiously to questions on lawmakers of alliance partner Congress lawmakers criticising him and saying they considered former chief minister Siddaramaiah as their chief minister. The Congress must control its lawmakers as they are "crossing the alliance line", Mr Kumaraswamy fumed. "If they want to continue with the same thing, I am ready to step down. They are crossing the line," Mr Kumaraswamy told reporters, not hiding his exasperation. On Sunday, two Congress lawmakers had launched an all-out, public critique of the Chief Minister and charged that no development had taken place in the seven months on Mr Kumaraswamy's watch. Congress legislator ST Somashekar went as far as to say that there would have been "real development" if Mr Siddaramaiah had got another term. Another Congress leader, minister C Puttarangashetty, said, "Only Siddaramaiah is my chief minister". Mr Kumaraswamy, asked to respond to the provocative remarks, said: "Congress leaders have to watch out for all these issues. Congress leaders must think about all these things and control them... They are crossing the alliance's line. This is not going to affect me but Congress leaders only." Siddaramaiah was chief minister until May last year, when the Congress and Janata Dal Secular formed a coalition to keep the BJP out of power after a fractured verdict in the Karnataka election. He was present when the Congress leaders made the comments and seemed to agree as he said he would have completed development work if he had another term. Today, Mr Siddaramaiah, who now heads a coalition coordination committee, said: "You (media) are the people who create trouble. You ask one person, then second person and then third person. There is no trouble, I will speak to HD Kumaraswamy." Mr Siddaramaiah has been bitterly opposed to the Janata Dal Secular leadership since he quit the party in 2006 and joined the Congress over the sudden rise of Mr Kumaraswamy, former prime minister HD Deve Gowda's son. The Chief Minister may not be too happy also at the words of his own deputy, G Parameswara of the Congress. "Siddaramaiah has been the best Chief Minister. He is our Congress Legislature Party leader. For the MLAs, he (Siddaramaiah) is the chief minister. He has expressed his opinion. What is wrong in that? We are all happy with him (Mr Kumaraswamy)," Mr Parameswara said. The Congress's Karnataka president said the lawmakers had committed a self-goal. "Development is taking place. Kumaraswamy is our chief minister. What Somashekhar said is not acceptable. He will have to explain or face action," said Dinesh Gundu Rao. The Chief Minister's outburst follows days of turmoil within the ruling Janata Dal (Secular)-Congress alliance, which has repeatedly expressed the fear of their lawmakers crossing over to the BJP and the coalition collapsing just months before the national election due by May. In an attempt to stanch rebellion, the Congress checked its lawmakers into a resort near Bengaluru. The ruling coalition accused the BJP of attempting a coup by luring Congress lawmakers. The BJP insisted that the coalition was trying to mask its own instability and insecurity by accusing it. The party's BS Yeddyurappa, also a former chief minister, sequestered all BJP lawmakers at a resort near Delhi. "Siddaramaiah and his supporters in the party are training guns at HD Kumaraswamy. There is intense war going on between Siddaramaiah and Kumaraswamy. To hide this from public glare, they are indulging in some drama of MLAs being wooed by BJP. The fact is this coalition is internally unstable," said the BJP's GVL Narasimha Rao.

NTR's Grandson, Whose Mother Is With BJP, All Set To Join Jagan Reddy's Party

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's brother-in-law Daggubati Venkateswara Rao and his son met YSR Congress President YS Jaganmohan Reddy on Sunday and expressed their wish to join the opposition party. Mr Rao hasn't been active in politics since 2014. Former Congress leader Venkateswara Rao, whose wife D Purandeswari is with the BJP, met the YSR Congress chief at his Lotus Pond home in Hyderabad. Mr Rao's son Hitesh Chenchuram wants to contest the Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections due in a few months on a YSR Congress ticket. Venkateswara Rao, the eldest son-in-law of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) founder and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister NT Rama Rao, told reporters they had a discussion with the YSR Congress leader and an announcement would soon be made in this regard. When asked if Hitesh Chenchuram wants to contest the Parchur seat, Mr Rao said, "It will be the party's decision and my son will abide by whatever the party says." Mr Rao, however, said that Purandeswari isn't planning to switch sides and will continue with the BJP. "She will either be with the party or retire from politics. That is her decision," he said. Purandeswari was a Union minister in the Manmohan Singh cabinet. But she quit the Congress to join the BJP after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014. The induction of Venkateswara Rao, known to be an arch rival of Chandrababu Naidu, and his son into the YSR Congress would be significant for the party ahead of the simultaneous polls to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly and the Lok Sabha. Jaganmohan Reddy is the Leader of Opposition in the Andhra Pradesh assembly. While he is fighting to defeat Chandrababu Naidu, one of NTR's sons-in-law, another son-in-law Daggubati Venkateshwar Rao wants to work with him. Venkateswara Rao had joined the TDP soon after actor-turned-politician NTR had floated it in 1983. The same year he was elected to the state Assembly and was re-elected in 1985. He also served as a minister in NTR's Cabinet. In 1991, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Bapatla constituency. In 1995, a few months after the TDP returned to power in Andhra Pradesh, Venkateswara Rao sided with Chandrababu Naidu in the revolt against NTR, but returned to the latter's camp a few weeks later when Mr Naidu reportedly sidelined him. After NTR's death in 1996, he along with NTR's second wife Lakshmi Parvathi founded a new party - the NTR TDP. But the party failed to make any impact in state politics. In 1999, he joined hands with NTR's son Harikrishna to launch a new party called Anna TDP. This attempt also proved to be a disaster. In 2004, he along with Purandeswari joined the Congress. He was elected to the Assembly from Parchur while Purandeswari was elected to the Lok Sabha from Bapatla. She became a minister in the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

VISAKHAPATNAM: Ahead of elections, the demand for implementation of bifurcation promises, particularly special category status (SCS) and railway zone, has gathered momentum. The city railway station, on Sunday morning, witnessed hundreds of sloganeering activists heading for New Delhi by AP Express as part of the ‘Jana Ghosha Rail Yatra’ spearheaded by Uttaranadhra Charcha Vedika. The rail yatra got overwhelming support from CPI, Lok Satta, CPM and social organisations. Congress To Contest Alone In Assembly, Lok Sabha Polls In Andhra Pradesh

Vijayawada: Congress in Andhra Pradesh has decided to go alone in the ensuing simultaneous elections to the State Assembly and Lok Sabha. Party's central leader Oommen Chandy, who is incharge of party affairs in Andhra Pradesh, on Wednesday said Congress had decided to contest all 175 Assembly and all 25 Lok Sabha seats. The decision would mean that there will be no Grand Alliance of Congress and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Andhra Pradesh. The two parties had jointly contested recent Assembly elections in Telangana but faced crushing defeat. TDP, which is the ruling party in Andhra Pradesh, was also ambiguous on whether it would contest the coming elections in the State in alliance with the Congress party. "I am connected with AICC not TDP or its leader Chandrababu Naidu. We will inform the high command and get permission," Mr Chandy said when asked if he conveyed the decision to Mr Naidu. He said the decision for an alliance with TDP in Telangana was taken by the party's central leadership. The former Kerala Chief Minister said the party also decided to form all committees including election committee as per AICC directions. "We have to nominate seven committees. We will give list of members to AICC this week itself," he said. He also announced that a meeting of all party conveners of Assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies will meet on January 31 to discuss and finalise everything related to elections. When asked if the party would find candidates to contest the elections, Chandy claimed that many people were ready to contest. "I cannot say. People will decide," he said when asked as to how many seats Congress would win. In 2014, Congress had drawn a blank in both Assembly and Lok Sabha polls. He, however, believes that the situation had now changed and people of Andhra Pradesh have full faith in Congress President Rahul Gandhi's promise to give special category status to the State. Mr Chandy said all leaders of the party under leadership of State Congress President Raghuveera Reddy would take out bus yatra in all 13 districts in February.

Priyanka Gandhi enters active politics ahead of 2019 polls

With an eye on the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday (January 23) appointed Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as general secretary for Uttar Pradesh East which comprises Lok Sabha seats of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and state Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. "I am very happy that my sister Priyanka will assist me in Uttar Pradesh in the Lok Sabha polls, she is very capable," Rahul Gandhi said. He also said that the decision to appoint Priyanka Gandhi as the general secretary of Uttar Pradesh East will help "initiate new thought in UP and will bring a positive change in UP politics." Rahul Gandhi later took to Twitter and said: "UP is central to building a new hope filled and compassionate India. The new UP AICC team lead by Priyanka and Jyotiraditya, will herald the dawn of a new kind of politics in the state. We will offer the youth in UP a dynamic new platform to transform the state." The significant revamp immediately became a point of political debate. While Congress and its allies welcomed the decision, saying it will be a great success for the party ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls given Priyanka's profile and the adoration she commands, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) mocked it saying that her entry into active politics is an admission from the Congress party that Rahul Gandhi has failed in providing leadership. PM Narendra Modi took a dig at Priyanka Gandhi's entry into politics saying that in the BJP, decisions are not taken considering a person or a family. Modi was interacting with BJP booth workers in Maharashtra when he made the sstatement. He said, "BJP does not take decisions based on what one person or one family wants, and that's why it is said mostly in the country family is the party, but in BJP party is the family." PM Modi in interaction with BJP workers from Maharashtra: Hamari party main Koi bhi nirnaya iss baat se nahi hote hain ki ek vyakti ya ek parivaar kya chahta hai, aur isliye kaha jata hai ki desh main zyadatar cases mein parivaar hi party hai, lekin BJP main party hi parivaar hai BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said Priyanka Gandhi's appointment shows the Congress party's admission of failure of party chief Rahul Gandhi. "As the Congress is not being accepted as part of 'mahagatbandhan' in states, a crutch is being searched in the family. Priyanka, who is from his (Rahul's) family, is like a crutch for him," Sambit Patra said. "Party is the family for the BJP whereas family is the party for Congress. All selections are done in only one family. Somewhere Rahul has failed... Who will be the next after Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi? Only one family! The new India is asking this question." Congress leaders hailed the decision to appoint Priyanka Gandhi as general secretary of eastern Uttar Pradesh. "We welcome Priyanka Gandhi's appointment as General Secretary . Her entry into active politics will energise cadres and be a catalyst for the rising fortunes of the Congress Party," senior leader Kapil Sibal said. The Shiv Sena said the Congress will benefit from Priyanka Gandhi's entry into politics as she has a good personality and possesses qualities of her grandmother Indira Gandhi. "It's a good decision by Rahul Gandhi, people of India always had a relation with Gandhi family. Indira Gandhi's legacy will always remain in this country, Congress will benefit from this," Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said. Until now, Priyanka's political forays had been largely limited to appearing at campaign rallies in constituencies held by her family members in the state. Prashant Kishor, vice president of the JD(U), described her appointment as "one of the most awaited entries in Indian politics". RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav welcomed Priyanka Gandhi's appointment, saying it will not only energise youth and party's cadre but also motivate 50 per cent woman population in politics. Rahul Gandhi also appointed Jyotiraditya Scindia as general secretary for Uttar Pradesh West and KC Venugopal as general secretary of the organisation. Venugopal has been entrusted with responsibilities of a post which was vacated by Ashok Gehlot who became Rajasthan chief minister after the assembly polls.

Chandrababu Naidu Over PM at kolkatta.

KOLKATA: In one of his sharpest attacks at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu today said "the prime minister is a publicity PM, but what we want is a performing prime minister." Speaking at the mega opposition rally in Kolkata organised by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Mr Naidu said the BJP-led government has betrayed the nation. "Five years ago, people gave the mandate for the BJP. They betrayed the nation. They gave slogans. Jan Dhan, mudra loan, good governance, smart cities, bringing back black money, two crore jobs, acche din. These are all slogans," he said. Chandrababu Naidu's Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which had been demanding a special category status for Andhra Pradesh from the centre, walked out of the ruling alliance led by the BJP in March last year. Despite numerous meetings with the central leadership, the TDP chief was unsuccessful in getting the recognition for his state. He started his 13-minute speech by acknowledging the contributions of freedom fighters from Bengal. "We have only one ambition. Save India, save democracy. The BJP wants to divide India, we want to unite India. That's why all the leaders are here today," Mr Naidu said. He went on to criticise the Modi government over the Rafale jet controversy and the notes ban, which he said hit farmers and small traders hard. "Even GST is a fraud. Today you are seeing economic growth is stagnant." Amid allegations that the BJP was trying to destabilise the coalition government in Karnataka, where legislators have been shepherded into resorts to prevent horse-trading, Mr Naidu said the Modi government was trying to interfere in the federal setup. "They are harassing states. If you see Kashmir, how they behaved there... Even in Karnataka, it is an elected government but they want to manipulate and destabilise the Karnataka government. They are going to pay a heavy price," Mr Naidu said. "(Chief Minister) HD Kumaraswamy has rightly mentioned just now they (BJP) are offering huge money to MLAs; they want to purchase them just like animals." The TDP considers the demand for special status an emotional issue for the people of Andhra Pradesh. Just before it pulled out of the central coalition, it claimed that the BJP had supported special category status when it was in opposition, but failed to fulfil its promise.

AP Minister Devineni Uma comments on KTR, YS Jagan meeting

AP Minister Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao reacted with strong comments on KTR and YS Jagan's meeting. He said that KCR's front is not the federal front, but it's Modi's front. Andhra people will not forget the allegations made by KCR on them at the time of Telangana movement. YS Jagan is shameless to meet KCR. KTR Meets Jagan Mohan Reddy Regarding Federal Front

HYDERABAD: In the middle of "gatbandhan" politics as parties prepare for the national election, Andhra Pradesh leader Jaganmohan Reddy's meeting with Telangana's ruling TRS today has drawn attention. Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao or KCR's son KT Rama Rao (aka KTR) met Jaganmohan Reddy in Hyderabad to invite his YSR Congress party to join a non-BJP, non-Congress Federal Front. Jaganmohan Reddy is the Leader of Opposition in the Andhra Pradesh assembly. This is the first direct talks between the leaders of two parties since KCR floated the idea of a front as an alternative to both the ruling BJP and the Congress. KCR, the chief of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti, has already held talks with Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Janata Dal (United) leader and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and DMK leader MK Stalin. After taking over as the chief minister for a second straight term after his party's election victory in last month's elections, KCR has amped up his efforts towards a Federal Front for the national polls due by May. The TRS is also likely to discuss with Jagan the possibility of working together in Andhra Pradesh to defeat a common enemy - Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and his Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Jagan, who recently completed a 3,650-km foot march in Andhra Pradesh, told NDTV that he looks upon KCR and his party as "great friends" of Andhra Pradesh. KCR had last month talked about "returning the gift" after the Andhra chief minister campaigned extensively for the elections in neighbouring Telangana. The Congress-Naidu alliance failed to make an impact in Telangana and KCR was re-elected after his party won 88 seats in the 119-memer assembly. The Congress won 19 seats.
